A Statement on Education

Reading Progress:

To the Board of Education,

North Carolina has seen changes in education bills that have spurred debates and caused concern in the educational system. Two of these bills are HB 187, also known as the Equality in Education Bill, and HB 88, also known as the Guilford Board of Education Vacancies Law. Both of these bills have the potential to alter the current education system in the state, and the Greensboro NAACP is dedicated to bringing awareness and advocacy about the bills’ contents and their implications for North Carolina.

Since the passing of HB 88 our The Greensboro NAACP have been monitoring and educating the community on what HB 88’s impacts may be in our county. We are disgusted at the behavior of Michael Logan during Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting. The Greensboro NAACP is nonpartisan so our concerns about appointed leadership is not about party politics but about what is in the interest of our community and students. Our leaders, members and community will continue to be committed to working with elected officials to lead with equity, fairness and a willingness to support all of our communities’ needs in their decision making. We are hopeful that the new District 3 School Board member Bill J. Goebel will be working with all of our elected officials towards mutual accountability in the best interest of our students, parents and educators in Guilford County.

Our leadership is also sending a clear message to the Board of Education that The Greensboro NAACP does not and will not support the rehire of any educator(s) that have not only been publicly temperamental, but has a history of questionable behaviors along the lines of race & gender equity.

The Greensboro NAACP has tasked our Education Committee, Chaired by April Parker to review the implications of HB 187 in Guilford County. Our concern is that this bill threatens educators’ ability to discuss the social structures, the realities of racism and its long term implications in our country, and restricts students’ engagement with accurate teachings of history and current events. We value our educators and school district leaders and are committed to the accuracy and inclusivity in the educational curriculum taught to all students.

Staying true to the NAACP’s mission to “ achieve equity, political rights, and social inclusion by advancing policies and practices that expand human and civil rights, eliminate discrimination, and accelerate the well-being, education, and economic security of Black people and all persons of color.” We will continue our advocacy against HB 187 and look to collaboratively support any efforts to keep our education system inclusive and equitable.
